What are the advantages of V.92? What is Modem on Hold?
One of the biggest advantages of the V.92 protocol is what is known as "Modem on Hold." This feature allows you to take an incoming call on your telephone while placing your Internet connection on hold. When the conversation is complete, your computer's dial-up connection picks back up right where you left off.

"Modem on Hold" requires a V.92 modem installed in your computer with software provided by the modem manufacturer, a V.92 modem at the MetaLINK number you are dialing, and the Call Waiting service from your local phone company. The Caller ID service is optional (see the next paragraph). Most of MetaLINK's dial-up locations have V.92 modems.

Some manufacturers' software allows your computer to use your phone company's Caller ID service that will tell you who is calling. This way you can decide whether to take the call or not.

A second advantage is V.44 compression. This protocol allows the modems to compress the data in a more efficient manner. This allows more data to be sent in the same amount of time.

The third advantage is called "Quick Connect." When two modems connect, they go through a series of tones known as a handshake. This handshake allows the modems to decide on what is the best protocol to use during the connection. With Quick Connect, your modem remembers the protocol that it used last time it connected. The next time it tries that protocol first, making for a quicker initial connection.
