Improper shutdown of computers, bad sections of the hard drive, and other problems can damage files on the machine. One way to recover some lost space, as well as check your hard drive for errors, is to run Scandisk.
To run Scandisk: Windows 95/98/ME:
Click 'Start', 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools', and then 'Scandisk'. Your hard drive should be selected. Select 'Thorough' under Type of Test, and check 'Automatically Fix Errors' Click the Start button
Windows XP: Click 'Start', and then 'Run' In the Open box, type 'chkdsk', and then click 'OK' A black box will appear, and Scandisk will run
You cannot use the computer while running Scandisk. It is best to start Scandisk and let it run overnight. |
