Defragmenting a hard drive |
Over time, Windows will save files in different sections on the physical hard drive, and it may not save them in the most optimal places. As files get scattered, it takes longer for Windows to find files, and will slow down the machine. Defragmenting the hard drive can help speed up the overall performance of the machine.
To run Disk Defragmenter: Windows 95/98/ME:
Click 'Start', 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools', and then 'Disk Defragmenter'. Your hard drive should be selected. Click the 'Start' button.
Windows XP: Click 'Start', 'All Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools', 'Disk Defragmenter' Your hard drive should be selected. Click the 'Defrag' button
Disk Defragmenter can sometimes take a long time to run. Do not use the computer at all while it is running. If the computer is used heavily during the day, it is a good idea to start the Defragment process late at night and to let it run. |
